Irish - Wolfhounds "vom Tollhaus"

To prevent misunderstandings because I don`t want to hurt any breeder in any way I removed from my home page all pedigrees and photos of Irish-Wolfhounds who are not bred by me!

I have got Irish-Wolfhounds for 21 years now and there was a time it was the dog of all my dreams.
It is still my dream-dog from its behaviour but what happens to this breed at the moment is no longer tolerable for me - not in face of the breed nor in face of the future owners.
When I bought my first Wolfhound it was said they have got a life expectancy of approximately 8 years. I found it very short at that time but I could live with this prospect. I bought my first two bitches one after the other and both actually reached the age of 8 years.
Then eight years ago I started breeding.
Our A-litter came on 28.10.1995, 4/3 pups.

Out of this litter the first bitch "Amy" died on bone cancer at the age of 2 ˝.
Two males, "Andor" and "Aaron" died at the age of  6 because of  cardiac muscle weakness. This type of death from heart disease shows a creeping course for a longer time. Because of water accumulation in the lungs the dogs are coughing frequently. Cardiac increasing and vascular diseases could be diagnosed long before death: look at "Unser Windhund", January 2003, page 21.
One bitch of this litter "Ayleen" has also got this heart disease but she is still alive.
I don`t know anything about the three remaining dogs because we lost contact with the owners.

That was our A-litter and you could add that at this time we haven`t still got no obliged heart check-up. Right!

Our B-litter was born on the 19.11.1996, 3/2 pups.
One little girl, "Bailey" was put to sleep when she was 4 months old. She died because of  "Rhinitis",  an inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, which is caused by a virus. This serious and often deadly disease is nearly only found with Wolfhounds. Luckily this disease  is really rare: look at Elizabeth C. Murphy, "Der Irische Wolfhound", page 290.
One male of this litter, "Bodyguard", died at the age of 5 because of  bone cancer (Osteosarcome). Bone cancer is the most frequent kind of cancer for Wolfhounds: look at Mary McBryde, "Der Irish-Wolfhound", page 235.

The D-litter was born on the 26.02.2000, 5/5 pups.
Both parents were examined in all respects of heart diseases - with best results: there were no indications for any heart diseases. But nevertheless there occurred heart diseases in this litter.
This litter will be four years old in February 2004.
One male, "Dragon", died at the age of 3 years because of cardiac muscle weakness.
Two other dogs, "Duncan" and "Daja" suffer from cardiac rhythm disturbances. This is the most frequent type of death from heart disease and this death comes suddenly - without any warning. The dog breaks down and is dead.
There are not many published reports about the ability of diagnosing cardiac rhythm disturbances of dogs. One appeared in: "Unser Windhund", January 2003, page 21. It is presumed that heart diseases behave like other diseases as well - they miss out several generations to appear again in their descendants.
The other pups of this litter have not been to any heart check-up and we have lost contact to some of the owners.

One beautiful bitch we bought for breeding did not have the right character and so we did not breed with her. It turned out that she suffered from cardiac muscle weakness and died at the age of five.

Even today I get inquiries on Wolfhounds nearly every week. People ask for pups or adults because they know how they were brought up by us.
That we stopped breeding Irish Wolfhounds has got nothing to do with the sales of pups. Only because I cannot tolerate how the Irish Wolfhound develops today in connection with height, weight and life expectancy.

I would like to have Irish Wolfhounds that still look like sighthounds/greyhounds, who has got the suppleness of running dogs and who would be able to chase like their ancestors.

We stop breeding Irish Wolfhounds for the next few years. In which direction the breeding of these wonderful dogs will develop that remains to be seen.

I ask for your understanding.
